How to make a good conversation

In Korea, there is an idiom, “a soft answer turns away wrath, or good words are good cheap.” It means that you get paid off debt by a soft talk. It is totally agreeable especially our communication range got broader from our daily social life to SNS; we communicate with TOO many people which mean you are communicating with more people who get on your nerves! How will you handle their offensive talk? You might think ‘what’s the big deal?’ but a lot of Korean celebrities who killed themselves because of malicious comments on the internet. Even though you might not notice, the effects of the words are huge.

So, how do I handle them? Fight back? But did it really work out when you fought back? No, not really. Sam Horn, the author of ‘Tongue Fu,’ tells us that we have three choices in this case:
1. Change the opponents
2. Change the situation
3. Change YOURSELF

She says that the first choice is impossible and the second choice is ineffective. The last choice is suitable, but it takes challenge. However, if others cannot change, YOU are the one who have to be changed. William Blake said “be an informed innocence.” Don’t be naive, maintain the innocence but be wise. Talk softly in a respectable way first, but strongly appeal your situation or opinion, and try to ignore the offensive talks about you. Do not panic! Be strong.
